Back in the gold rush days, the area where the town of Hillsboro stands today was in it's heyday after Dan Dungan and Dave Stitzel were prospecting the east side of Black Range they came across some interesting float that after some serious disagreement about it's worth, was assayed at $160 a ton. They filed a claim pronto and news spread like wildfire and before you know it they had a community of miners. To choose a town name everyone threw a name for the fledgling town into a hat and Hillsboro was born. The first house was built in 1877 and all of the support business like a bar, blacksmith and all the other things that follow the money were flowing in daily. Despite fierce Indian attacks, the town grew. The post office opened in 1879 and never closed, and Hillsboro became the county seat in 1884. It grew to about 1,200 people by 1907. Some have been calling it a ghost town for years but I hear the town still exists today and home to several restaurants, gift shops, a museum, grocery, a bed and breakfast, a bank, a post office and more. Clara, a serious rock hound from New Mexico, found this amethyst rough in the Hillsboro area. I was lucky to see it for sale and to add such beautiful top quality amethyst on the site. -WET pic.-(5 lbs. 7 oz.)
