Polyhedroid Agate

Product Description

Polyhedroid Agates are also from the great agate producing country of Brazil, but were found in only one location, Paraiba, Brazil.  These unique shaped agates are geometric patterns rather than the random round look of most agates. These wonderful specimens were only available for a very short time in the 1970's and are extremely difficult to find today. Seems the holders are holding fast. These were very popular as jewelry items when the agates heyday was in full swing being all you needed to do is keep its natural shape. I can imagine all the triangle and box shaped free form pendants hanging on black leather rope. The formation of these agates is still a topic of discussion among geologists. Most agree that the agates formed in the interstices between tabular crystal formations of calcite in the somewhat randomly shaped angled spaces between calcite crystals. Well all that was needed now was for enough time to go by for the calcite to degrade back to the earth leaving the much harder agates behind. Just like when obsidian degrades and leaves all its bubbles behind in the form of agates. The agate nodules themselves are sometimes hollow and the best grades feature sharp, colorful fortification bands that follow the shapes of the agates. Black, blue, gray & white seem to be common colors. -DRY pic.-(4"x 2"/2.6 oz./7mm thk) no fractures...
